SUMMARY:Central Iowa Traveling Horseshoe League
DESCRIPTION:CITHL\nCentral Iowa Traveling Horseshoe League \nDes Moines / Ames area players have the opportunity to play in a sanctioned league for teams of four to five players (per team) on Tuesday nights beginning the first Tuesday in May\, on May 2nd. Team captains should get their team rosters to Chris Jordan as soon as possible. The league fee is $80 per team. Captains should make certain that all players they recruit have paid their 2023 NHPA dues. \nHome courts are currently located in Ames at North River Valley Park\, In West Des Moines at the Florer Courts in Holiday Park\, and in Des Moines at the Iowa State Fairgrounds courts. Play begins promptly at 6:30 pm. “Count all” scoring is used and averages for each player (average points per night) are kept weekly to determine the team handicap for the following week. All teams play both a “home” and “away” match. If additional teams enter the league\, the season will lengthen. Four 40-shoe games are played each night. \nYou have the opportunity to play in the Central Iowa Traveling Horseshoe League (CITHL). This league is the longest continually running traveling horseshoe league in the United States. \nRusty Ringers\nBobby\, Deb\, Russ\, and Kenny Wiese – 2022 CITHL League Winners

SUMMARY:Ray Daugherty
DESCRIPTION:RAYMOND DAUGHERTY OBITUARY\nRaymond E. Daugherty\, age 92\, passed away February 14\, 2023. Raymond was born “at home\,” in rural Burlington Junction\, Mo.\, on July 2\, 1930\, to Helen (Hagerty) and Fred Daugherty. He attended a one room school for his primary studies\, riding a horse to and from school. He attended Tarkio High School\, where he excelled in all sports and met the love of his life\, Janis Lash. The two were married on August 27\, 1948\, and spent 61 plus years together\, until her death in 2010. Ray held a variety of jobs in the early years as a farmhand\, as well as working for the lumberyard\, in Tarkio\, shoveling box cars of sand for extra pay after hours. He moved to Omaha\, Neb.\, in 1952\, securing work in the fuel trucking industry. His young family joined him shortly after and they made a home in Council Bluffs. He began driving for Wynne Transport in 1961\, when the now large company had only five trucks. He logged countless safe driving miles\, receiving recognition from the President’s Safe Driving Council. Ray worked as an owner operator for Wynne until his retirement in 1995. No stranger to hard work\, Ray could seemingly fix or do anything. Ray excelled at the game of horseshoes\, winning a state championship in his class. He was instrumental in forming the Southwest Iowa Horseshoe Pitching Association\, working tirelessly at bringing the Sunset Park Horseshoe Courts to Council Bluffs. He helped to organize and run many leagues and tournaments throughout the years\, and for many years after he stopped competing. He was always willing and helpful trying to get others interested in the game\, providing equipment\, advice and encouragement. He was elected to the Iowa Horseshoe Pitching Hall of Fame in 2014. Ray is preceded in death by his parents; brother\, Keith; and wife\, Janis. He is survived by his two sons\, Pat (Rita) and Tim (Rosemary Pauley); grandchildren\, David (Carri) and Rose (Will Rudd); great-grandchildren\, Taylor\, Brad and Aiden; sister\, Judith (Bill) Vogt; many nieces and nephews; special friend\, Mary Smith; and countless other friends. Christian Wake service\, Sunday\, 4 p.m.\, followed by visitation until 6 p.m.\, all at the Cutler-O’Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial\, Monday\, 10 a.m.\, at St. Peter Catholic Church. Interment\, Memorial Park Cemetery\, followed by a luncheon at the parish hall. Family will direct memorials. \nPublished by The Daily Nonpareil on Feb. 17\, 2023.\nTo plant trees in memory\, please visit the Sympathy Store.
